What is Security Software? How can it help protect my computer or network?
Security software, a somewhat confusing term. At its most basic security software can be split into three very different types.
1)Antivirus Software
2)Firewall Software
3)Spyware/Adaware Software
Each type of software has its very own purpose. These three types combine and work together to help keep your computer/network and data safe and secure.
AntiVirus Software
Antivirus software does exactly what it says on the tin. It prevents Virus's, Trojans, Worms and bugs of the like that can be harmful to your computer/network or data.
A Virus - A computer program that has the ability to generate copies of itself and potentially damage your computer/network or data by doing so.
A Worm - A computer program that has the ability to generate copies of itself, similar to a computer virus. Worms are designed to exploit the file transmission capabilities found on computers and networks. Worms can also be used to deliver a virus.
A Trojan - A computer program that installs itself on computers without the user’s knowledge or consent. A Trojan allows an attacker elsewhere on the internet control your machine.
Firewall Software
Firewall software adds an extra layer of security between your PC and the internet.
A firewall allows you to control the applications that access the internet and prevent unauthorized access to your computer or network from an attacker elsewhere on the internet.
Spyware/Adaware Software
Spyware or Adaware software works much like antivirus. Like viruses Spyware or Adware Secretly installs onto your computer.
Spyware it able to spy on you, sending data back to the attacker about the sites you browse and visit.
Adware like spyware hides on your machine and tends to generate advertising, namely those dreaded pop-ups. Spyware and Adware often cause a computer to operate much slower than it normally would without these nasty programs.
